Annual report of the Czechoslovak Roma Union z. s. for 2023
During the year of hope-filled 2023, the scope of the Czechoslovak Roma Union expanded significantly. This organization, which has aimed to improve the living conditions of Roma and other marginalized groups since its founding, turned its attention to another serious problem – supporting the poor and refugees who found themselves in need as a result of the war conflict in Ukraine. This initiative was accepted with an open heart and great willingness to help those who were forced to leave their homes in search of safety and refuge.
Our commitment was not limited to providing material assistance. As part of our volunteer activities, we became more intensively integrated into the community of the excluded locality of Mojžíř. This area, which has long faced social and economic problems, became the scene of our regular interventions. We tried not only to alleviate the immediate needs of its inhabitants, but also to work on long-term solutions that would help improve their living situation.
The Sunday gathering at the main train station in Ústí nad Labem has become our ritual and a symbol of solidarity. For the fifth year in a row, we have gathered here to cook and distribute hot meals to those who find themselves in difficult life situations. These gestures of support and community have had enormous meaning not only for those who received the food, but also for us who prepared and distributed it.
Our efforts for cultural enrichment and integration have not been limited to the local level. In close cooperation with the Prague Food Bank, we have organized a number of cultural events that aimed not only to strengthen community spirit, but also to raise awareness of Roma culture and history. As part of these events, we continued to support the DOLJA singing group, which has served as a bridge between different cultures and generations since its founding in 2022.
A significant moment was the commemoration of the deceased in Lety u Písku, where a memorial service was held commemorating the tragic events of the past.
We represented our efforts and values on the international stage. We toured our documentary film about the founder of our union, Štefan Pong, at festivals across Europe, including England, Spain, Germany and of course the Czech Republic. This activity not only raised awareness of our work, but also brought the history and culture of the Roma closer to the wider public.
One of the highlights of our activities was undoubtedly our performance at the United Nations. On this occasion, Vice-President Petra Gelbart, together with her son, remembered the Roma victims of the Holocaust in song. This moment was not only an honor for all of us, but also a reminder of the importance of our work and the necessity of memory.
The year 2023 was undoubtedly full of challenges, but also significant successes, which were made possible thanks to the constant commitment, determination and support of our volunteers, partners and community. We are deeply grateful to everyone who has contributed to our work and helped us make a difference in the lives of those who need it most. Our collective efforts and solidarity are a testament to the fact that together we can overcome even the greatest challenges.
