Pieta Lety u Písek Speech
Today’s memorial service in Lety u Písku was a moving and historic event, commemorating the victims of the Protectorate concentration camp and at the same time showing that the Czech nation stands for justice and recognition of the tragic past. It is gratifying to see President Petr Pavel and other important figures present at this memorial service, which shows that this issue is important to us.
Ivan Bartoš deserves recognition for his participation, even if he was not on stage today. The President’s recognition of the fact that the camp in Lety was a concentration camp for Roma is also important for recognizing the truth about this dark period in our history. His statement on the early release of the arsonists from Vítkov points out that justice must be upheld.
The petition of the Czechoslovak Roma Union submitted to Miloš Vystrčil is another step towards improving relations between the Czech nation and the Roma community. Let us hope that this act of solidarity will lead to dialogue and mutual understanding between both sides and that the future will prove to be bright for all citizens of the Czech Republic.
